About Wild Pampas Birding & Nature

Wild Pampas Birding & Nature offers private birding experiences in Buenos Aires and the surrounding region. It is designed for both travelers who arrive with target species and a clear plan, and those looking for a more personal way into the birds, habitats, and rhythms of Argentina.

The approach is grounded in local knowledge, careful reading of the field, and a style of guiding that takes both birds and people seriously. That means responsible field practice, care around sensitive habitats and nesting sites, and real attention to different paces, needs, and ways of experiencing a day outdoors. For longer itineraries or trips to other destinations in Argentina, Wild Pampas works with a trusted network of collaborators who share the same commitment and a sustainable, respectful view of nature.

Javier Pereyra | Director & Birding Guide

Why does a Rufous Hornero build with mud the way an Inuit builds with ice? Why does a Chalk-browed Mockingbird throw itself at a viper? How does a Fork-tailed Flycatcher cross thousands of kilometers of open sky with a tail twice the length of its body?

Even as a child, what drew me was never only the bird, but the mystery they held. Birds were never just the subject. They were the question.

Curiosity came long before guiding. For years I drove a cab in Buenos Aires while birding and literature occupied equal space in my life. Books were my first way of traveling. Birding was where that journey became real.

I began working with conservation organizations, including Aves Argentinas, first as a driver and then increasingly from within, joining field outings with some of the most experienced guides in the country. At one point I found myself pointing out species and identifying calls right alongside the guides and the passengers.

Someone told me, “You’re already a guide. You just don’t know it yet.”

Over time, I qualified as a birding guide in El Palmar National Park, in Entre Ríos Province, and Ciervo de los Pantanos National Park, in Buenos Aires Province. By then I was already working professionally, traveling widely across Argentina with some of the country’s leading agencies and building a list of more than 720 species. My focus today is Buenos Aires and its surroundings: my home ground, the landscape I know best and have walked and photographed for years, and the place where my field experience runs deepest.

Wild Pampas Birding & Nature grew out of that same old need: a way of doing what I love most, in the best way I know how, and never halfway.

I lead private birding outings in Buenos Aires City and Province, the Paraná Delta, southern Entre Ríos, and nearby coastal landscapes. What people trust me with is not only a tour. It is their time, their money, and a part of their trip they want to remember. I do not guide by script: each day depends on the season, the habitat, and the people in front of me. Years of work taught me to observe more than birds.

Photography is also part of how I read the field. Not because I teach technique, but because it taught me a different kind of attention, patience, and respect for the living world.

I do not do things halfway. Wild Pampas is the best work I know how to do.
